The first issue, a very funky edition, came out in November
of 1985. Creating and developing the magazine has taken many
very challenging years. We now enjoy the fruits of that labor
while being challenged to continue to produce the best publication
in the field of touch therapies.
MASSAGE Magazine
has led the way in journalism, exclusive interviews, technique
columns, news and research reporting as well as its design
format since its inception in 1985. We've been copied and
followed because at MASSAGE Magazine, being the best is our
everyday goal.
1985 Vision to create the magazine came to Robert Noah
Calvert after watching a television commercial for sports
cream in Kona, Hawaii, where the magazine began.
1990 Moved all magazine operations to Davis, California,
starting over with all new staff except the founding owners,
Robert and Judi Calvert.
1996 Moved the magazine to Spokane, Washington. Maintained
editorial office in Santa Cruz, California, with same editorial
staff. All other staff hired new in Spokane.
1998 Winner of the Ozzie Awards Best Cover for a magazine
over 35,000 circulation. Electric Boy cover throws its sparks
around.
2000 Moved the magazine to our current location across
the Spokane river into a more modern and larger facility.
2002 Published our 100th Issue.
2004
Launched two new publications: Skinship Journal,
a quarterly publication all about touch, not technique. The
second, The Sourcebook for Touch Therapies, a resource book
that serves as a private tour of the industry.
2005
In May 2005, MASSAGE magazine joined The Doyle Group,
publishers of Chiropractic Economics, a business magazine
published 18 times a year for practicing chiropractors. The
business operations of the magazine moved to Ponte Vedra Beach,
Fla., home of The Doyle Group, while the editorial offices
remain the Santa Cruz.
