The Many Tools of Deep Self-MassageThe Many Tools of Deep Self-Massage
by Richard Hoff

"The Many Tools of Self- Massage" by Richard Hoff explores the growing trend toward self-care by the public and the  need for massage therapists to educate their clients in the use of massage tools. Massage tools, according to Hoff, can allow the client to continue the work the therapist has begun. Hoff goes on to discuss the "origin of chronic tension" with a detailed description of muscle spasm. He writes of his belief that muscle armoring begins in childhood and continues to build as adults experience muscular trauma. A basic technique for using massage tools is described as are 10 different massage tools. Four types of tools are discussed: "small hand-held" tools, tools designed to lie upon, tools with a "nutcracker action," and "cane-style massagers." The tools described include the Index Knobber® II, the Knobble®, the Jacknobber® II, the Hand-L®, the Ma Roller®, the Diskin™, the Body Back Buddy™ (Original Back Nobber® and Theracane® are mentioned), the Acumasseur®, the Batando®, and the Utemoto Massager.
