Massage Magazine: July/August '00: Lomilomi: Ancient Hawaiian Healing ArtLomilomi: Ancient Hawaiian Healing Art
by Tamara Mondragon

Lomilomi has always been a part of the tradition of the Hawaiian people. Mondragon describes the history of lomilomi from the early 19th century through the suppression of Hawaiian cultural practices in the late 1800's, to the present day practice of sharing lomilomi with the world. When defining lomilomi, Mondragon quotes Maka'ala Yates, "a Hawaiian medical specialist," saying"...The purpose of lomilomi is to bring alignment back to the individual in body, mind and spirit." Mondragon goes on to describe what a client can expect from a practitioner from the practitioner's perspective and then discusses the training involved in becoming a lomilomi practitioner.

E aloha mai
E mana mai
E pono mai
E ola no!

Amama, ua noa.

Let there be love
Let there be power
Let there be harmony
Let there be healing!
So be it, it is done.
