We
Asked: How
have your clients' knowledge and expectations of massage changed
over the years?
Here
is what you told us...
They
see it as more of a way of life as opposed to a luxury. People are
more willing to get massages. Before, it was Oh, I’m
naked, and they
were very skeptical. Now it’s being portrayed more as a health
remedy for stress and as relief for other health issues. More people
are willing to just say, OK, I’ll try it. And
then once they do come in they say, Why haven’t I been
doing this my whole life?

They
certainly are becoming more and more aware of how holistic massage
is and more aware of their own bodies and their own needs.

I
think they look at it as more of a professional service now. They
know it can help with chronic pain, which is what I specialize in,
and that’s really important.

I
have seen a change. They have a more open attitude toward
massage and bodywork. I think that clients are more knowledgeable
about the benefits of massage for all areas of their life, not just
for relaxation. I think that change in expectations has made it
more pleasant for me as a therapist to use other modalities. They’re
more open to me working with them in neuromuscular therapy or Russian
medical massage because they realize the benefits of different types
of massage.

Their
expectations have changed based on the education and knowledge that
I have given them, and the experiences they have had. They want
to know more and feel better.

They
have changed as I have changed. Their experience of massage is directly
dependent on the space that I create for them, whether it’s
a first-time massage or someone who’s been receiving it for
10 years. My clients’
knowledge of massage as an experience toward wholeness and sacred
relationship is in direct proportion to my own connection to and
awareness of the inseparability of body, mind and spirit.
