Practice
Building: 6
Keys to Effective Communication
by Arlene Alpert
In
her quest as a counselor to improve her own communication skills with
her clients, Arlene Alpert "learned the vital components of an
outstanding communication model," which she discusses in her
article "6 Keys to Effective Communication, How to Empower Your
Sessions with Listening and Speaking Techniques." Door-openers,
paraphrasing, parroting, silence, I-statements and shifting gears
are the six keys Alpert describes to effectively "create a safe
space for both you and your client." Alpert offers examples of
ways these powerful yet simple techniques can be applied in everyday
situations to enhance the client/therapist relationship. She points
out that "direct communication is both an art and a science"
and with constant practice the therapist can become more empathetic
to the needs of the client.
