An anatomical illustration of the hamstring

Hamstring strain occurs frequently in active populations and is one of the more common lower-extremity injuries. This injury is sometimes referred to in lay terms as a pulled muscle. Hamstring strain could result from any activity, but is caused most often by those involving sprinting, due to the high force loads on the hamstrings. The hamstrings are particularly susceptible to strain injury because of their anatomical structure and biomechanical function.
