Exercise Cuts Colon Cancer Risk

European researchers have discovered that just one hour of daily vigorous exercise, or two hours of less strenuous exercise, can lower the risk of developing colon cancer.

A study of more than 413,000 people found that people with the highest level of exercise were 22 percent less likely to develop colon cancer than people with the lowest activity level. The benefit was slightly less among people where overweight or obese.

Scientists at the International Agency for Research on Cancer, in Lyon, France, report that more than 940,000 cases of colon cancer diagnosed in the developed world each year, and about 492,00 people die from the disease annually. They estimate that up to 70 percent of cases could be prevented with diet and exercise.
