Where’s
the Fruit?
Researchers
have found that less than half of all Americans are eating enough
fruits and vegetables to gain the full nutritional benefits of these
foods. In a study conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
and the National Cancer Institute, and reported in the Journal of
the American Dietetic Association, between 1999-2000 only 40 percent
of the population met the then-current recommendation of consuming
five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day. The recommendations
were increased in 2005, to 2 to 6 cups per day of fruits and vegetables.
Final
word: Make fruit and vegetables a larger part of your daily diet
and reap the nutritional rewards.
