MT Foundation Announces 2006
Student Case Report Winners

The Massage Therapy Foundation announced the winners of its 2006 Student Case Report Contest in late June.

The student contest promotes research literacy in massage-therapy schools by integrating research into schools' existing programs. With the support and cooperation of schools, students learn to write a research case report and simultaneously begin to incorporate research into their practice habits.

This year‘s first-place gold award goes to Lindsay Phipps Eisensmith from the Groton Campus of the Connecticut Center for Massage Therapy. Her report is titled “Massage Therapy Decreases Frequency and Intensity of Symptoms Related to Temporomandibular Joint Disorder.” As the first-place winner, Eisensmith receives: $2,500 cash; an invitation to present her report during a Foundation- sponsored session at the AMTA National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia; $1,000 each for both herself and her faculty supervisor to attend the 2006 convention; and publication of her case report in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (JBMT).

The second-place silver award goes to Meg Russell from Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Her report is titled “Massage Therapy Benefits Restless Leg Syndrome.” Russell receives $2,000 cash, an invitation to present her case report as a poster session during the AMTA National Convention, and publication of her case report in JBMT.

An honorable mention was awarded to Peggi Honig from the Potomac Massage Training Institute in Washington, DC for her report titled “A Case Report of the Treatment of Piriformis Syndrome: Applying Modalities of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.”
