Michigan Massage Therapists Escape Sales Tax

The controversial Michigan law that imposed sales tax on services, including massage therapy (www.massagemag.com/michigantax), was repealed on Dec. 6, according to online news reports.
The income that won't be generated by the tax will be generated by a new tax on business, according to Michigan news site Hometown Life (www.hometownlife.com).
"The previous stalemate between the House and Senate’s different proposals was answered late last Friday evening as a compromise was reached," the site reported. "The resulting 21.99 percent surcharge to the Michigan Business Tax will take effect Jan. 1 and is expected to raise $750 million, keeping the state budget in tact. The surcharge will have a $6-million cap per business and last until 2017." |
