In a study of physically active young males with tight hamstrings and at least one latent trigger point, the combination of stretching and myofascial trigger-point therapy was shown to decrease pain and

improve range of motion, among other positive findings.

The full research report of  “Trigger-Point Therapy Blends Well with Stretching,” ran in the print edition of MASSAGE Magazine's February 2011 issue.

The fact that trigger point therapy and stretching is a good combination makes quite a lot of sense when you keep in mind that a trigger point shortens the muscle. When the trigger point is released the muscle is allowed to lengthen and increase in range of motion. Stretching, and I prefer to use mostly pnf stretching when working with trigger point, allows the body-mind to experience this greater increase in rom, especially when a muscle has been tight for a long time.
