Would you perform effleurage to Pink Floyd?
According to an article published yesterday in The New York Times, New Age music is no longer the only soundtrack for massage therapy.
The article profiles a new menu offering at Bliss spas in New York and Hoboken, where clients "sample and then select one of four musical playlists (rock, classical, world or electronic); don Bluetooth headphones (which also block out noise in the hallways), then spend the next hour being massaged in sync to the
Massage therapist Ben Brown created the music-based session offering, the article noted, which is just one of many types of new "extreme" massage sessions "intended to affect all of the senses, using music, colored lights, vibrations, spinning tables [and] gemstones."
"[T]herapists say the amped-up services are taking off, thanks to a new generation of savvy spa-goers who are willing to be more adventurous, especially if there's a promise of unwinding faster," the article stated.

I think that studies do not count in the area of music and unwinding. I do know that there are times that heavy metal music amps me up and other times calms me. I love the idea of allowing clients to choose the type of music they listen to. I know that with being a Doula I bring what ever type of music my patients want me to but when I go to a clients home to do massage if they would rather choose the type of music they listen to I make sure I have a large selection. I honestly love listening to Non-typical massage music a million times more than when I am working at the spa listening to "spa music"! I am just excited To see that I am not the only one. I do enjoy listening to spa music but nit all of the time.

This sound like a great idea, however, the type of music is important - real loud and/or heavy music does NOT lower stress, and demonstrated in numerous studies. Top 40 may be OK, but skip the rap, hard rock, heavy metal, etc.
