A national certification exam in equine massage—the first exam of its kind—will launch this spring, its developers announced April 23.

The Equine Massage and Acupressure National Certification Examinations will be hosted online by Hocking College, which has had an equine-sciences program for more than 20 years and is known for its two-year Equine Health Care & Complementary Therapies Associates Degree program.

A team of massage and acupressure professionals, including Theresa Gagnon of the Bancroft School of Massage Therapy, Tina Romine and Bill Harnetty, D.V.M., of Hocking College, Lola Michelin of the Northwest School
of Animal Massage, and Elaine Calenda and Barbara Maciejewski of the Boulder College of Massage, developed the massage exam.

"This is the beginning of establishing these complementary therapies as recognized career paths," a press release read. "These initial steps toward national certification are similar to the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval: It is a professional standard that the public and veterinary community can trust."
