Movement Training Prevents Low-Back Pain

Low-back pain is lessened by practicing a movement-education technique, according to new research.

The Alexander Technique focuses on posture and coordination, and has been shown in past research to benefit Parkinson’s disease patients. It may also be practiced by massage therapists for self-care.

In an article published Aug. 19 in the British Medical Journal, the study’s authors noted, “One to one lessons in the Alexander technique from registered teachers have long term benefits for patients with chronic back pain. Six lessons followed by exercise prescription were nearly as effective as 24 lessons.” The authors found that after one year, exercise combined with lessons in the Alexander technique significantly reduced pain and improved functioning
