2012 summit to be held in Aspen, Colorado, June 3 to 6

Aspen, CO, April 10, 2012 –– At the 2012 Global Spa and Wellness Summit, which will take place June 3 to 6 in Aspen, Colorado, the Aspen Institute will present the Aspen Health Innovation Project: Barriers to Innovation and Promoting Innovation. The panel will consist of a series of short, to-the-point talks, exploring why the American health system is innovative in the development of medical treatments and procedures, but lacking in delivery system innovation. The goal will be to identify local solutions, promising approaches, and innovations in health and wellness. In addition, the Aspen Institute’s recent publication, Reinventing Health Care, will be discussed.

The Aspen Health Innovation panel will feature Dr. Basit Chaudhry, medical and research director at IBM; Dr. Joseph Hutter, Fellow, Institute for Health Care Delivery Research, Intermountain Healthcare; and Dr. Victor Dzau, chancellor of Duke Medical Center. Dr. Kavita Patel, managing director for clinical transformation and delivery at the Brookings Institute’s Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform, will moderate. Franmarie Kennedy, deputy director of the Aspen Institute’s Health, Biomedical Science, and Society Program, will introduce the panel.

The theme of the 2012 Summit is “Innovation through Imagination.” Three days of keynotes, presentations and panels will focus more generally on the role and process of innovation for societies and enterprises, as well as the most innovative and imaginative concepts now emerging across—and ahead for—the health, wellness and spa industries.

The Aspen Institute mission is twofold: to foster values-based leadership, encouraging individuals to reflect on the ideals and ideas that define a good society, and to provide a neutral and balanced venue for discussing and acting on critical issues. The Aspen Institute does this primarily in four ways: seminars, young-leader fellowships around the globe, policy programs, and public conferences and events. The Institute is based in Washington, DC; Aspen, Colorado; and on the Wye River on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. It also has offices in New York City and an international network of partners.
