On Oct. 10, 2010, Ann Arbor, Michigan-based Bellanina® Day Spa joined the global work party to actively do something in the local community about global warming. The call to action was initiated by Project Hope and The Ecology Center adopting the program from 350.org, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing carbon emissions from the current level of 388ppm (parts per million) down to 350ppm, which scientists say is the safe upper limit of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. From planting trees to installing solar panels, individuals, businesses and communities were encouraged to participate in grass root projects that cut carbon and celebrate climate solutions.
Bellanina® Day Spa chose to create a series of raised bed gardens in front of their business at 201 N. Fourth Avenue. “Our idea was to create a community garden where we can grow fresh herbs and vegetables in order to actively engage our employees in environmental responsibility and sustainability” said Nina Howard, owner of Bellanina®.
Although it is the end of the growing season and mums are currently residing in the garden, the associates at Bellanina® are already planning what they will plant in the spring. This new garden is only one of the ways Bellanina® Day Spa is “going green,” but it is obviously the most visible to the community. “I encourage all of my fellow business owners to join the cause. Together, we can make a difference” challenged Howard.
