From the MASSAGE Magazine article, “High-Tech Touch: Electromechanical Massage Equipment Provides a Helping Hand,” by Jenny Hogan, in the July 2010 issue. Article summary: The healing touch of a massage therapist will never be replaced entirely by equipment—yet, there are many ways electromechanical equipment can assist a massage therapist, provide an extra hand in the session room and perform certain modalities even better than hands alone.

The air around us is filled with electrically charged particles; they are positively or negatively charged ions. Both ions occur naturally in the air; however, the environment we live in today has far more positive than negative ions. Positive ions turn into free radicals in our body, resulting in the acceleration of the aging process, and premature aging occurs.

Free radicals are highly reactive, imbalanced molecules that are the byproducts of normal metabolism and are associated with cellular damage and the degenerative aging process. People with a lot of free radicals in their bodies usually experience headache, insomnia, neurasthenia, fatigue, increased blood acidity and blood pressure, a tensed nervous system and a host of other effects.

Free radicals can be produced by, but are not limited to, the following:

• Discharge of voltage in high-voltage networks, heating and cooling system;

• TVs, radios, transmitters, radar systems, computer;

• Exhaust cigarette fumes and smog; and

• Radiation, harmful chemicals and toxins.

They damage cells and are believed to be the reason for the deterioration of our physical and emotional well-being, thus having a major role in the aging process.

Recent research has indicated negative ions in our bodies repair damaged cells by neutralizing free radicals, revitalizing cell metabolism and speeding physical recovery. They also balance the autonomic nervous system by relaxing the nerves and purifying the blood, promoting deep sleep and healthy digestion. They also enhance the immune system and protect the body and mind from the harmful effects of environmental stress.

Negative ions serve to disinfect and clean the air, resulting in the death of bacteria. A microbiologist and experimental pathologist at the University of California found an astounding small quantity of negative ions could kill bacteria quickly.

We must surround ourselves with sufficient amount of negative ions, in order to ensure our heath and well-being.
