Six US COMTA Accredited Schools Receive BIOTONE-Funded Scholarships

SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–BIOTONE and the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) announced the recipients of the 2009 Edu-Scholarship Fund. Six COMTA accredited schools across the United States each will receive a $500 scholarship, which they will award to promising students. The announcement was made at the COMTA reception held in conjunction with the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) Council of Schools 2009 Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting held in January in San Antonio, Texas.

The six schools receiving the awards include: East-West College of Healing Arts, Portland, Ore.; Potomac Massage Therapy Institute, Washington, D.C.; Cayce/Reilly School of Massotherapy, Virginia Beach, Va.; American Institute of Massage, Richmond, Va.; CenterPoint Massage and Shiatsu School and Clinic, Minneapolis, Minn.; and the International Professional School of Bodywork, San Diego, Calif.

“Support for education continues to be one of BIOTONE’s key corporate initiatives,” said Jean Shea, BIOTONE founder and CEO. “Not only does this annual scholarship program contribute to the professional development of future generations of massage therapists, it sends a strong message about the partnerships that underlie the strength of our industry.”

Launched in 2007, the joint BIOTONE and COMTA program awards six $500 BIOTONE-funded scholarships to selected COMTA accredited schools. The schools then award their scholarships to deserving massage students who have achieved educational excellence at the mid point of their curriculum.

Criteria for a scholarship selection include a school’s standing. The recipient schools and programs each had annual and financial reports accepted without condition. In turn, students applying for the scholarships currently must be enrolled in a school’s massage therapy program and have reached the midway point in their curriculum. Awards are based on a student’s academic performance, future massage therapist potential and leadership in community activities. Special circumstances also are considered. All funds must be used for tuition, school and education related expenses.

“COMTA is very pleased to partner with BIOTONE to support worthy students in massage therapy programs,” said Dr. John R. Goss III, COMTA interim executive director. “Such partnerships not only allow others to prepare for the profession, but enhance the profession on the whole through the recognition of exceptional preparation and excellent scholarship.”

The Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation, a non-profit independent body, seeks to improve the quality of education for students seeking education in the fields of massage therapy and bodywork through an accreditation process that reflects the current and emerging professional practice standards. COMTA is a recognized specialized accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education.
