After being discussed briefly yesterday in a meeting of the California State Assembly, a bill that would roll back regulation of California’s massage therapists from a voluntary statewide certification to local entities has been put in suspense until at least next week.

MASSAGE Magazine has learned that, according to an attendee at yesterday’s meeting of the assembly, AB 1822 is in the process of being amended so that massage therapists certified through the California Massage Therapy Council, which administers the statewide credential, will not be subjected to local law enforcement background checks.

As of press time, calls and emails to the California Massage Therapy Council to verify the attendee’s statement regarding the amendment were not yet returned to MASSAGE Magazine.

Law enforcement agencies have claimed publicly that they need to retain control over massage therapists due to prostitutes posing as massage professionals.
