House Bill 2499, a legislative proposal to license massage therapists, was signed into law by Governor Edward G. Rendell on Oct. 9.
A grandfathering process will let existing practitioners to qualify for a license without obtaining additional education or taking an exam.
Once the grandfathering provision expires, applicants need to complete at least 600 hours’ massage education and pass an exam approved or administered by the board.
Professions exempt from the law include energy work, movement education and reflexology.
