In “We Must Standardize and Validate Our Profession,” the Guest Editorial in MASSAGE Magazine‘s June 2011 issue, Lloyd List details how understanding the definition of massage and the physiological effects that it can have on the body is paramount to truly understanding it is a valid medical modality that is effective in the treatment of many conditions.

“If we want to elevate our profession and take our place in the medical field so that we are equipped to work with medical doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors and rehabilitation therapists, changes must be made,” List writes. “We need to be known as specialists who manipulate superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to enhance function and treat specific conditions by using these techniques.”
