SAN RAMON, CA (June 2, 2010) — Some migraine sufferers may be able to reduce the severity or frequency of pain through self-applied acupressure and guided imagery. A new, three-part video series from Hill Physicians Medical Group demonstrates these techniques and helps viewers identify nutritional and environmental factors that may be triggering or worsening their migraines. The videos may be viewed at www.HillPhysicians.com/Videos.
The new series, “Migraine Relief,” is released just before National Headaches Awareness Week, June 6 through 12, which seeks to raise broader understanding of all types of headaches, including migraines.
“These self-help techniques cost no money and can be learned quickly,” says Judi Hennebry Wise, director of education services at Hill Physicians. “A viewer can use these at the onset of a migraine to lessen pain or as part of a preventive strategy developed in conjunction with his or her physician.”
The first video in the series demonstrates how a person can apply physical pressure at selected points on the body to lessen the pain of migraine. A second video shows the use of guided imagery to train the mind to disregard certain pain signals. The third video highlights nutritional and environmental “dos and don’ts” for the migraine sufferer. Each video is accompanied by a downloadable tip sheet.
Migraine headaches are a collection of symptoms which ultimately result in the diagnosis of a migraine syndrome. Migraines are believed to be a disturbance in the nervous system, producing symptoms that often differ from person to person or incident to incident. Just as the symptoms vary, so too can treatment. Medications are tried individually or in combination, taking considerable time, expense and perseverance to find an approach that may work.
According to the Migraine Research Foundation, a person goes to the emergency room for migraine pain every 10 seconds in the U.S. and employers lose 113 million lost work days annually to headaches and migraines. On average, persons with chronic migraines make less money, are less likely to hold a full-time job, more likely to go out on disability and also experience higher levels of depression, anxiety, high blood pressure and other health conditions, according to the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.
The Migraine Relief video series at www.HillPhysicians.com/Videos is part of Hill Physicians’ multimedia outreach to encourage healthier living. Internal content experts from across the organization select the topics and develop original videos, audio podcasts and supporting materials. The collaborative projects are organized by Hill Physicians’ Education Services Department. Podcasts are intended as a self-help resource but are not a substitute for professional medical or mental health help. If you are experiencing prolonged symptoms, please consult your primary care physician for treatment options.
