MASSAGE Magazine staff’s thoughts and hearts are with residents of the East Coast, who have experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

Massage therapists throughout the U.S. have developed teams and procedures for assisting first responders in disaster-stricken areas. In the wake of hurricanes, floods, fires, earthquakes and other events, therapists can be found providing massage to responders including firefighters, police officers, search-and-rescue teams and others.

We encourage massage therapists around the country to make a donation to an organization of their choice. MASSAGE Magazine has made a donation to Massage Therapists Helping Massage Therapists (see below).

American Red Cross: This organization partners with massage teams in the wake of disasters such as Hurricane Sandy.

Emergency Response Massage International: This organization oversees teams of massage therapists that provide massage after major events and disasters.

American Massage Therapy Association Massage Emergency Response Teams (MERT): AMTA Chapter teams of massage therapists specially trained to provide massage to disaster-relief workers.

• Massage Therapists Helping Massage Therapists: Gloria Ku’uleialoha Coppola, who owns Massage Pro CE continuing education company, is accepting gift cards for distribution to massage therapists along the Eastern Seaboard. She has also set up a Facebook page, “Massage Therapists Helping Massage Therapists (Storm Sandy)” to serve as a clearinghouse for information on how massage therapists can assist their colleagues, and is organizing a fundraising event.
