Holistic Massage Training Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, recently entered into an articulation agreement with Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland. Graduates of Holistic Massage Training Institute’s program may now receive 19 college credits.
This is a benefit to students, because Maryland has a two-tier system of licensing massage therapists. With less than 60 college credits, a therapist in Maryland is licensed as a registered massage practitioner, and may not work in a health care setting. With 60 college credits, a therapist in Maryland is licensed as a licensed massage therapist and is permitted to work in a health care setting.
The agreement was put in place in late August 2013 and will be applicable to its currently enrolled class of massage therapy students.
Holistic Massage Training Institute opened its doors in November 1999, starting with three students taking their first steps toward rewarding careers as massage therapists. Over the past decade, the school has graduated 180 students, and continues to provide massage therapy instruction, serving students from Baltimore and attracting students from the surrounding areas as far as Virginia. The school is approved by the Maryland Higher Education Commission and accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools.
Holistic Massage Training Institute offers a 600-hour (nine-, 12- or 18-month) massage therapy training which, once completed, will qualify the student to sit for the National Certification Exam in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, and become either a licensed massage therapist or registered massage practitioner in Maryland. Our program provides students the experience, hands-on-training and essential knowledge of what is needed to operate a successful massage practice.
Graduates of this training will be qualified to do basic Swedish and deep-tissue massage; however, as the name “holistic” implies, we also offer our students a robust, well-rounded curriculum which includes training in many other techniques, such as craniosacral therapy, chakra balancing, myofascial release, acupressure, shiatsu, reflexology, prenatal massage, massage for infants, children and geriatric clients, and medical massage.
Our school has a group of 11 instructors who bring experience as massage therapists to the classroom. Our students hold massage clinics at various times during their training, when they practice techniques on members of the public, under the supervision of instructors. They also participate in charitable events and health fairs. This real-world experience is invaluable to students.
We offer small classes, typically four-to-six students per instructor, which allows for extensive personal attention. Our maximum class size is 10 students per instructor. Our students are diverse in age and gender. Currently we are training students who range in age from 17 to 62 years old.
