Popular yoga anatomy author offers customizable breath-centered routines

Champaign, IL–Yoga practitioners have praised Leslie Kaminoff’s Yoga Anatomy (Human Kinetics, 2007), and now he brings his expert instruction to DVD with Breath-Centered Yoga With Leslie Kaminoff (Human Kinetics, 2010). The sought-after instructor offers customizable yoga routines that can be modified for any body type.

“What makes this DVD unique is the degree to which the student can individualize his or her experience,” says Kaminoff. “We have four models in the DVD, and each of them is modifying the same sequence in ways that work for his or her unique body.” Kaminoff also includes special audio tracks to accompany each model’s movement, which explain the modifications to poses in more detail.

“Many of the popular styles of yoga emphasize a strong, flowing sequence of postures that involve supporting the weight of the upper body on the hands, wrists, and arms,” Kaminoff explains. “Unfortunately, this can be a problem because many of the people seeking improved health through yoga are also vulnerable to problems in the upper extremities, and arm support runs the risk of exacerbating these problems.”

To accommodate these varying needs, Kaminoff offers sequences that don’t require any support from the arms or hands, but instead provide a strong workout for the feet, legs and hips while also providing a full range of motion for the spine and breathing structures.

For all body types, Kaminoff stresses the importance of keeping breath at the center of each sequence. “Breath is the principle that unites the mind and the body into a singular activity in which they are doing the same thing at the same time, and that is how we designed these yoga sequences,” says Kaminoff.

Breath-Centered Yoga With Leslie Kaminoff provides yoga sequences for increasing flexibility, balance, strength, relaxation and mental clarity. Participants can practice the content of the DVD in its entirety, or they can create customized sequences in 20-minute, 30-minute, 40-minute or 60-minute segments.
