Massage franchises are growing in popularity, and Massage Envy continues to lead the pack. Now, Entrepreneur magazine has ranked Massage Envy at number 58 on its list of top 500 franchises. A year ago, the massage franchise was ranked number 82 on the list.

The magazine’s 30th Annual Franchise 500 survey also ranked Massage Envy as the 20th fastest-growing franchise in the nation. Last year, Massage Envy was ranked number 32 on that list.

According to Entrepreneur magazine, rankings are based on factors including financial strength and stability, growth rate, the size of the system and start-up costs. Other quantifiable measures include percentage of terminations, length of time in business and litigation history.

The membership-model franchise, founded in 2002, now has more than 500,000 members, performed its ten-millionth massage in late 2008, and recently opened its 527th clinic. There are 300 more franchise locations currently under development, and the company employs more than 8.000 massage therapists nationwide.

Massage Envy CEO David Humphrey attributed the company’s success in part to “the growing number of consumers who understand the health benefits of regular therapeutic massage.”
