“We received thousands of submissions to the Student Scholarship Giveaway,” said Jennifer Whalen, MASSAGE Magazine‘s editor of integrated media. “Cynthia’s essay was so poignant, and we were impressed with her plan to pay it forward and promote the wonderful benefits of massage.”
Forte aspires to be certified in oncology massage. She says her goal is to work with this population at a cancer treatment center, her local hospital’s oncology unit as well as volunteer to work with hospice patients in their homes. She would also like to educate others about the benefits and effects of massage therapy and establish a massage therapy program at her local hospital.
“I am very humbled and honored to have been chosen as the grand-prize winner for 2013! I was completely surprised and ecstatic when I got the call,” said Forte. “I will complete the Associate of Science in Massage Therapy program at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, Massachusetts, in May 2014 and will be taking Tracy Walton’s advanced training program in oncology massage in Boston in March 2014. I hope to promote collaborative research and the use of massage therapy as complementary therapy for those being treated for cancer and other disease at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. My goal is to shed light on how massage therapy can play a role in a hospital or medical-based setting.”
Amy Hyitt, a student at the Institute of Therapeutic Massage in Lima, Ohio, is the second-prize winner of MASSAGE Magazine‘s Student Scholarship Giveaway. Hyitt won an Ultimate Business Starter Package from Massage Warehouse, along with a one-year subscription to MASSAGE Magazine. “I cannot wait to graduate and go to work every day doing what I love to do,” said Hyitt. “Thank you, MASSAGE Magazine [and Massage Warehouse], for providing me with the resources to help me achieve my goal.”
The third-prize winner of the giveaway is Justin Rasik, a bodywork student at Touch Education in Altamonte Springs, Florida. Rasik won a Massage Lubricant Starter Kit from Sombra Professional Therapy Products, along with a one-year subscription to MASSAGE Magazine. “Things like this are why I love the massage therapy industry and all that MASSAGE Magazine does to enhance every therapist’s experience in this profession.”
Additional prizes were awarded to Kassie Cressall, a future massage therapy student at Health Works Institute in Bozeman, Montana, and Lewis Brown, a retired military veteran and student at Everest University. Cressall and Brown both received a one-year liability insurance policy from Massage Magazine Insurance Plus.
