Losing a job is right up there with the death of a relative, in terms of one of the most stressing events in person’s life.

In a bid to reduce the stress of local residents, a California massage school will offer free massage sessions to people who have recently lost their jobs.

Dubbed the Pink Slip Massage Therapy Relief Act by administrators at the National Holistic Institute Massage Clinic, in Encino, the intention of the event is to reduce stress for the jobless and their families. Each client will be eligible to receive one 50-minute massage on April 17 or 24; or May 8 or 15.

“The latest California unemployment rate was 10.5 percent, tying Rhode Island for the fifth highest rate in the country,” stated a school press release. “Rising unemployment has dramatically increased stress levels for the jobless and their families.

“Massage therapy has been proven to relieve stress, relax muscles, increase joint mobility, lower blood pressure and boost productivity,” the statement continued. “In fact, according to the American Massage Therapy Association, 36 percent of Americans got a massage to relieve stress in 2008.”

NHI Encino is one of five campuses of the National Holistic Institute. Eligible individuals must book online at www.nhi.edu/clinic by clicking on “Los Angeles.” Appointments will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
