Tonya Mayes, a massage therapist and psychotherapist based in West Reading, Penn., joined about a dozen other American volunteers on a three-week trip to Vietnam.

The group, which consisted of chiropractors, bodyworkers and energy workers, traveled across the poverty-ridden country offering free health clinics to everyone from children to the elderly to former combatants.

Mayes used massage and touch techniques to treat a variety of ailments including chronic arthritis, muscle pain and headaches. Mayes was moved by the reaction people had to the treatments. Many were suffering greatly with phantom pain from missing limbs, chronic arthritis, neurological disorders and a myriad of other conditions.

The group was led by Dr. John Fisher, a chiropractor from Colorado who had made the trip three times before.
