The power of music, the power of massage and the power of the two as a duo. On Saturday, July 12th from 6:00-8:30 p.m., Lauterstein-Conway Massage School will be holding a unique CD release
party – “Music and Massage.”

There will be a reception and public talk about the power of music and massage, followed by live improvised guitar music by David Lauterstein and mini-massage sessions for the general public. The sessions will be performed by Lauterstein-Conway faculty, graduates and students and are free to all, but reservations are required – 374-9222.

If you’ve ever had a professional massage, you know about the music.

“All those dolphin squeaks and dripping waterfalls and monotonous musical wallpaper,” caused Ray Benson of the famous group, Asleep at the Wheel, to wonder if he could do a better job. So he went to David Lauterstein, a trained musician and Co-director/instructor at Lauterstein-Conway Massage School, for advice. Benson never completed his musical project, but the conversation planted the seed for Lauterstein. Roots and Branches by David Lauterstein is the fi rst of a CD series for relaxation and massage. Each CD is recorded live to massage therapy.

“That way,” says Lauterstein, “each recording embodies the spirit of the deep relaxation experienced in massage.”
It was when Lauterstein moved to Austin, that he began bringing music and massage together in a unique way. What better city for it?

To deepen his massage students’ engagement, Lauterstein began to improvise relaxing acoustic guitar music while they massaged. The students found this so benefi cial that he began using his guitar regularly in his teaching, which he now does throughout the U.S. and in England each year. Through his study of music and massage, Lauterstein eventually felt like he could massage people through music, and felt like when he massaged, he was touching the muscle fi bers as one might the strings of a guitar. And after years of requests for his unique music, Lauterstein came up with a novel idea for capturing the feeling of the live musical-massage situation. He asked friend, David Murray, musician and owner of Murray Music, “Do you have room for three massage tables in
your studio?” Upon learning that Murray did, Lauterstein proposed, “How about if you record me accompanying three massage therapists in your studio?

You can choose any three people to receive these massages with live music for free.”

Murray said eagerly, “Yeah, how about tomorrow?” And that is how it began.

David Lauterstein is the perfect person to present this CD and speak about massage and music. Most known locally as a school owner, massage teacher and therapist, his guitar playing is one of the reasons he moved to Austin – the live music capitol. Lauterstein began studying guitar in the early ‘60’s at Chicago’s famous Old Town School of Folk Music, then Indian music in Berkeley, got his Bachelor in Music Composition from the University of Illinois, and did graduate studies in Munich, Germany.

However, his career didn’t end in music. Beginning in 1973 Lauterstein began exploring what he wanted to be when he “grew up,” as he describes it. His exploration led him on a path involving psychotherapy, philosophy, meditation, yoga, and finally, massage therapy. He began teaching massage in 1982 at the Chicago School of Massage Therapy and then moved to Austin to teach at Texas School of Massage Studies. He is currently the Co-Director of the renowned massage school, Lauterstein-Conway, as well as an instructor in massage therapy, specifically Deep Massage and Zero Balancing. He is also an active member of Choose Austin First and Austin Independent Business Alliance.
Lauterstein is glad he lives in Austin – where relaxation, music and massage are really a vital part of our community’s
health.
