In June, the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork announced it would soon launch a membership organization, the USA Massage Resource Alliance (usaMRA)—but on October 20, the NCBTMB’s chief executive officer told MASSAGE Magazine it had put its plans for the new organization on hold.

“Input from the profession regarding the purpose of usaMRA has led us to revisit this initiative during our [fourth-quarter] meeting,” said NCBTMB CEO Paul R. Lindamood. ” We will release more information regarding its future when it is available.”

The primary function of the usaMRA, as announced, was to provide low-cost liability and malpractice insurance to massage therapists. All NCBTMB certificants would be automatically enrolled in the organization, making it the largest national massage-membership association in the U.S.

The NCBTMB administers a certification exam that may be taken independently and is utilized by some states as a credentialing exam.
