Effective Jan. 1, 2012, New York State will require all licensed massage therapists to obtain 36 hours of continuing education units (CEUs) per three-year licensing period to maintain their credential.

Prior to this date, the state does not require CEUs.

According to the state’s Office of the Professions, classes in bodywork not considered massage, including reiki, Feldenkrais Method, the Alexander Technique, “or appearance enhancement practices as defined by the New York State Department of State” will not be accepted as continuing education; nor will any class “that is designed for the sole purpose of maximizing profits for the practice of a massage therapist.”
