A new scholarship has been created to benefit palliative massage therapists.

The Keith A. Schaeffer Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in the memory of the son of Synergy Massage & Wellness Center founders Margie and Craig Schaeffer. Keith A. Schaeffer died in 2002 at age 17 from complications of diabetes and leukemia.

The scholarship fund will assist professional massage therapists with books, continuing education, equipment, supplies or childcare expenses while studying palliative massage for continuing education.

“My objective is to increase the educational offerings of palliative care continuing education classes for massage therapy,” said Margie Schaeffer. “The curriculum I developed at Synergy was strong in palliative care instruction due to Keith’s lifetime of health issues. He was my teacher so I could teach others how massage therapy and bodywork can help improve the quality of life for those experiencing life threatening conditions.”

The award goes to a massage therapist who is demonstrating work with palliative care clients. It will be awarded annually.
