Massage therapists in Colorado have to be registered with the state. As of April 1, a massage therapist must have at least 500 hours of training, pass a national certification test and file an application. The registration is good for two years.
The initial filing includes a fingerprinting and background check. But for supporters, that’s not such a big deal considering the guarantee that patients are getting.
Longmont Police Cmdr. Tim Lewis said the standards weren’t guaranteed to stop the sex trade from using “massage” as a cover — especially in organized rings — but the change should help.
Colorado is the 39th state to require registration for massage therapists. Before the new law, local practitioners were regulated by Longmont city ordinance.
