For more than 20 years, I’ve been attempting to improve the image of massage therapy by educating communities through free lectures and demos at community centers, organizations and health fairs. I’ve also written articles on related topics–for instance, carpal tunnel and fibromyalgia–and explained how certain massage modalities might help with symptoms. I’ve lobbied to change city and county ordinances that list massage under “Adult Entertainment,” and move it to a category to give us more professional recognition. I’m also an advocate for increasing the number of hours required for certification as well as improving the education of massage students, so after graduation they’re more confident and well-suited to help the public. For massage therapists, having the skills and mastering them will continue to help the reputation of the industry.
