We need separate classifications for massage therapists who have additional training and credentials, and who work with injuries and chronic pain in a medical setting. The public must be made aware of the difference between a relaxation massage and treatment work. I still find people who think massage is just a “feel good treat.” I also find that the chain massage outlets tend to devalue the image of massage in the public. Saying that, I have several clients who, after trying massage at a chain outlet, came in complaining that it was not a beneficial treatment and their specific problem areas were not addressed. Maybe I should be happy that I can work to address the pain that the chain outlet therapists aren’t trained to do. Massage schools don’t require enough hours of education any more. It’s a shame.
