To complement the MASSAGE Magazine article, “Energy Work for Today’s Massage Therapist: Polarity Therapy,” by Laura Allen, in the September 2011 issue. Article summary: Polarity therapy is based on the teachings of Randolph Stone, D.O., D.C. Stone meditated daily and sought spiritual enlightenment, which he found in 1945 when he read Mysticism the Spiritual Path, Volume 11, by Lekh Raj Puri. Stone felt it was just the philosophy he had been looking for, and it was all about energy—how everything is based on energy and how it can be used for spiritual growth.

Birth is a rite of passage, a sacred event, not religious, but when honored by parents as a time of deep inner exploration becomes a natural transition where they can heal themselves and gain self-empowerment.

Eckhart Tolle states, “A strong unconscious emotional pattern may even manifest as an external event that appears to just happen to you.” 1 This is true about pregnancy and birth. Recorded in the cells of our bodies are the feelings of our own gestation and birth: anger, fear, abandonment and disempowerment, to name a few. Previous births, miscarriages, abortions, dishonoring of our sacred organs weave the tapestry of our experience and affect the outcome of pregnancy and birth. We must start asking ourselves, “Do our babies learn and feel as they experience pregnancy and birth?”

Thomas Verny, M.D., states “The unborn child is a feeling, remembering, aware being, and because he is, what happens to him … in the nine months between conception and birth molds and shapes personality, drives and ambitions in very important ways.”2

Reiki (pronounced RAY-key), a Japanese word meaning spiritually guided life-force energy, is a gentle, easy, powerful method of hands-on bodywork . It promotes balance among all the body’s systems and the regenerative processes of body, mind and spirit. Reiki is profoundly relaxing, supporting good health, well-being and happiness.

Reiki is a natural fit with pregnancy and birth. Its ability to deeply relax the body releases stress during pregnancy. It deepens the connection between parents and baby. It can go to the root of any problem be it physical, mental, emotional or spiritual and gently facilitates the release of birth-related memories held in the cells of the body. The space created by the release is filled with the loving reiki vibration and gives parents a clean slate to create an empowering birth for all.

The father of natural childbirth, Grantly Dick-Read, M.D., in his book Childbirth Without Fear, explained that birth pain is caused by fear. Fear restricts blood circulation in the uterus. Restricted blood circulation gives rise to pain. Reiki deeply relaxes the body and, when used during labor and delivery, energy surges are experienced more as intense squeezing, not acute pain.

Reiki can be used many ways to deepen and ease pregnancy and birth making it the empowering rite of passage it is intended to be.
