09.12.14_FaceFirst Skin ScanSeptember 12, 2014 — With summer coming to an end, Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa has made a commitment to help people recover from the harsh summer sun. As a part of this initiative, throughout September, select Hand & Stone locations will be offering a free FaceFirst Analysis — 10-minute facial skin scans to help people identify and better treat areas of their skin damaged by the sun.

“Seeing is believing,” said Deb Worton, director of operations for Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa. “By implementing this service into our spas, we have an opportunity to educate consumers on what exactly the sun is doing to their skin. We will be able to show them exactly where their skin is damaged and, in turn, what the best treatment options are for them.”

Increased sun exposure often causes darkening areas of the skin. This discoloration is known as hyperpigmentation, which is created by an increase in melatonin normally from sun damage, inflammation or other skin injuries.

According to the Dermalogica Institute, the No. 1 cause of hyperpigmentation is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. This doesn’t just apply to simple, daily exposure to UV rays alone; chemical fragrances may react with sunlight, or medications may cause sun sensitivity. Even during moments of increased stress, skin can become prone to hyperpigmentation. Trauma to the skin (i.e. a graze on the knee, a squeeze of a spot, eczema or sinus congestion) can lead to pigmentation formation as well.

“We are surrounded daily by stressors to the point that it’s more important than ever for people to be aware of sun damage and take care of themselves,” Worton added.
