Santa Fe, NM March 6, 2012- After a thorough inspection of the Soothing Touch manufacturing facility and the review of its operating procedures by the New Mexico Organic Commodities Commission (NMOCC), Soothing Touch received its Certified Organic certificate from the New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA). The process allows consumers to be assured of transparency in manufacturing as well as confidence in what is on Soothing Touch labels.

The organic certification journey started in June of 2011 when it was pointed out that using the words ” made with organic ingredients” on a label required the manufacturer to be certified organic. Standards for organic personal-care products have not been established, but the U.S. Department of Agriculture under the National Organic Program (NOP) standards regulates using the language of “made with organic ingredients”. Soothing Touch decided that instead of removing this language, it would become certified organic, as this reflects the company’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

In October 2011, Soothing Touch submitted a 32-page application to NMOCC which included SOPs, QA standards and audit trails for all ingredients used in production. As part of the review process, NMOCC did an on-site inspection of the manufacturing plant. They inspected the facility as well as the paperwork maintained for the audit trail of SOPs and QA. The facility passed inspection and the audit trail required additional enhancements, which were made.

The most interesting aspect of the process was that all ingredients (whether organic or not) used in manufacturing organic products must meet a minimum of organic standards: no GMOs, no irradiation and no sludge fertilizer used to grow the raw ingredients. Some ingredients from certain suppliers did not comply and Soothing Touch found new suppliers that did. The company’s chocolate and coffee are now local Santa Fe, fair trade and certified organic. The journey has been an education for all who work at Soothing Touch. The company is proud of its commitment to organics and environmental sustainability.
