Spa reaffirms commitment to eco-friendly, sustainable practice

BOULDER, COLO. (September 30, 2011) – St .Julien Hotel & Spa has announced it has been awarded the prestigious 2011 SpaFinder Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Environmental Practices.” The honor was presented to 10 international awardees–chosen from more than 80,000 spas worldwide–whose dedication to the local environment epitomizes eco-friendly, sustainable practice.

“This award represents the coordinated efforts of our world-class team, who worked together to come up with ideas–some turnkey–to prevent unnecessary waste and promote reuse,” said Candis Ayers, director of the Spa at St. Julien. “Over the past few years, our industry has made giant steps in joining the ‘green’ movement to move away from environmentally harmful and unsustainable products; for our part at the St. Julien Spa, we’ve made small decisions along the way which ultimately play a positive role on our local community. This recognition confirms our thinking on what it means to be ‘green.’”

In addition to the use of compostable cups and containers, Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper and other environmentally friendly products, an organic garden on the St. Julien grounds provides fresh herbs used for treatments throughout the spa. The 10,000-square-foot Spa at St. Julien maintains a focus on local products as every treatment utilizes signature ingredients based on Colorado’s indigenous plants and elements. In addition, the spa donates worn sheets, towels and robes to the local Humane Society.

Speaking on the significance of the award, Susie Ellis, president of SpaFinder noted, “[the] honor [is] bestowed on [the Spa at St. Julien] by thousands of spa-savvy consumers and travel agents who voted in our Readers’ Choice poll.”

Committed to reducing its impact on the environment, the 201-room St Julien is working closely with Boulder-based UHG Consulting to set and achieve various environmental goals including becoming a zero waste property by the end of 2011. From recycling and composting throughout the hotel and spa to the use of energy efficient lighting, programmable thermostats and eco-conscious hotel cleaning products, St Julien Hotel & Spa has currently attained an impressive 70-percent diversion rate, which indicates that 70 percent of the waste produced by the hotel is diverted from landfills for recycling, re-use or composting.
