Mela Therapeutics, a massage therapy center specializing in international, elite and professional athletes within their South Florida locations, is accepting internship applications for their 2016 NFL Draft Prep Sports Massage Internship Program. Since 2007, Mela has shared the advanced training techniques they use on the winners of the NFL Super Bowl, MLB World Series, NBA Titleholders, UFC Stars, elite athletes, and 100s of professional players and draft prospects with interns seeking experience in sports massage. Mela Therapeutics owners Kika and Roberto Mela have collectively more than 35 years of experience treating elite athletes and work together to provide both a male and female perspective in the education of the interns.
During the internship, Mela offers aspects of working with athletes ranging from social media guidelines, to developing a massage session based on the training needs and recommendations of the medical team. The free training that Mela provides is formatted to encourage therapists to learn how to work within a team setting, when to apply different massage techniques, and how to become comfortable working alongside physical therapists, chiropractors, strength coaches, Pilates instructors, Muscle Activation Techniques specialists, acupuncturists and orthopedists.
The internship starts in November of every year by providing extensive training to prepare the therapists for when the players arrive in January. Continued training in advanced sports massage techniques and the hands-on experience working on the players lasts for eight weeks, through February 2016. The interns are required to work for a minimum of 10 hours per week for the eight weeks and to accumulate 80 hours of practical hands-on experience.
Who will be there?
This year, Mela Therapeutics’ interns will be working exclusively with the NFL Draft Prospects training at Bommarito Performance Systems (BPS). Pete Bommarito has an extensive history preparing players for the NFL Draft and has accumulated more than 500 total draft picks, including more than 30 first-round picks. Interns will be working out of the BPS locations in North Miami and Davie, Florida.
Who can apply?
The internship is a huge opportunity for any therapist looking to gain hands-on experience working with high-level athletes. The eight weeks of hands-on time enables the therapist to see the changes that occur over time and gain a better understanding of the environment. Mela often hires therapists who have gone through their program, and together with BPS look to help interns gain jobs across the country.
