The Greater Long Island Running Club Sports Massage Team will complete 18 years as the only group of its kind on Long Island, New York. The team was formed in October 1991 by Team Coordinator Alan End, a New York state massage therapist, soon after graduating from the Swedish Institute.
“As a competitive runner since 1980, I felt there was a need for post-race massage at local running events,” says End. “As a club board member, I petitioned the other members and asked that the team be paid for their services. When the board approved, I began recruiting qualified members. One of them, Tom Wissman, has been with us since the beginning.”
The team, which currently has 10 members, has participated in events ranging from 5Ks to triathlons. This year, the team has been or will be at the King Park 15k, Aspire 10k, Runday 5K, Long Island Women’s Championship, Police Appreciation Run, Runners Edge-TOBAY Triathlon, Oysterfest 5k and Ho Ho Ho Holday Run. Massage therapists in the area who are interested in joining the team can contact End at www.glirc.org or (516) 433-8663.
