Award presented at the FSMTA Annual Convention

Tiffany Field, Ph.D., Receives the Performance Health 2011 Humanitarian Award, MASSAGE Magazine

Akron, Ohio – July 11, 2011 – Tiffany Field, Ph.D., was presented with the Performance Health Humanitarian Award at this year’s Florida State Massage Therapy Association Annual Convention. Performance Health, manufacturer and marketer of Biofreeze®, Prossage® and Thera-Band® health and wellness products, honors an individual annually in the massage therapy industry for his or her efforts in improving the welfare of clients and demonstrating selfless devotion to others.

Bob Poirier, vice president of commercial operations for Performance Health, had the honor of presenting the award to Field. During the presentation he remarked, “Although not a massage therapist, Dr. Field has touched each and every one of us who make their living touching. After seeing how well her premature infant daughter responded to massage, Tiffany was inspired to know more and do more. That was over 30 years ago and her inspiration has truly benefited us all. Because of Tiffany’s efforts in researching the efficacy of massage and touch therapies, massage therapy has become a highly respected profession.

“Tiffany began conducting research into the beneficial effects of healthy touch in 1982, long before massage was even beginning to be accepted by either physicians or the public. In 1992 she established the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, with a startup grant from Johnson & Johnson. Before the Touch Research Institute started, no other organization was focused solely on the study of touch,” continued Mr. Poirier. “The research that the Touch Research Institute conducted showed that massage resulted in premature infants gaining more weight than their non-massaged peers—thereby improving the infants’ health and potentially saving millions of dollars in healthcare costs. That study was published in 1988. Today, more than 100 studies and 450 medical-journal articles later, the Touch Research Institute has conducted studies on autism, anorexia, pregnancy, low-back pain, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, cerebral palsy, spinal-cord injury, asthma and many more. Tiffany is recognized as the premier expert in, and advocate for, touch research.”

Upon receiving the award, Field said, “I am very proud and very grateful for this award. I have been very fortunate to collaborate with massage therapists in our efforts to document the healing power of massage therapy.”

In addition to honoring Field at the FSMTA convention, Performance Health will donate $500 to the Touch Research Institute.

About The Touch Research Institute

The Touch Research Institute was formally established in 1992 by Director Tiffany Field, Ph.D., at the University of Miami School of Medicine with a startup grant from Johnson & Johnson. The TRI was the first center in the world devoted solely to the study of touch and its application in science and medicine. The TRI distinguished team of researchers, representing Duke, Harvard, Maryland and other universities, strive to better define touch as it promotes health and contributes to the treatment of disease.
