Ten members of the Ultimate Sports Massage team traveled to Washington, D.C. to volunteer at the Marine Corps Marathon.

The therapists provided post-event sports massage in charity village for two separate but equally important groups: The Injured Marine Fund/Team Semper Fi and Hope 4 the Warriors.

“Every team member worked hard all day long, I can’t thank them enough for their dedication,” said Lori-Ann Gallant-Heilborn, founder of Ultimate Sports Massage LLC, and two-time Olympic sports-massage therapist. “We all were involved with providing sports massage to the wounded Marines and Sailors throughout the day.”
The day was especially important for Heilborn, because her son, a United States Marine, also volunteered for the event. His unit manned the military gun that shot the start of the marathon.

Back in charity village, special guests stopped by throughout the day, including Robert Duval, the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

For volunteers, the day started at 2 a.m., when the alarms went off. All massage therapists were in the trucks by 3 a.m., and arrived at the event site at 3:45 a.m.

The volunteers then unloaded the team gear, parked the trucks and made the 2-mile walk to the starting line.

Runners started arriving at around 5 a.m. Some ran and others used hand cycles. Ultimate Sports Massage team members admitted it was pretty inspiring to watch.

Runners began coming in for massage around 9:30 a.m. These were the 10K participants. By 10:30 a.m., the event was in full swing, and the sports massage team continued to provide the much needed service until the last runner was on the table around 4:30 p.m.

The Ultimate Sports Massage Team worked nonstop throughout the day. According to Heilborn, “We took water breaks in between sessions and knew enough to have a decent breakfast prior to starting the day.”

“The energy level was intense. We had so much fun working in this environment,” she added. “The therapists of the Ultimate Sports Massage Team are incredible people. I’m proud to say I work with them and we are team members. Thank you: Christen, Dave, Trish, Beth, Johnny, Karen, Dwayne, Becky and Jessica!”
