How Do I Become A Massage Therapist in Ohio?

If you’re ready to move into your career as a massage therapist in Ohio, you must register with the Ohio State Medical Board. The registration fee is $150. Once you are registered, you must receive licensure by the Board. If you do not register, you will be working illegally and can receive a fine.

In order to receive this license, you must complete a minimum of 750 hours from an approved massage therapy program and pass the MBLEx exam.

The Ohio State Medical Board provides a list of approved schools where future LMTs can complete their 750 required hours.

Below are two approved schools in Ohio to help you get started on what you may be looking for in a massage therapy education.

  • Ohio College of Massotherapy: Educating students in the field of massage therapy since 1973, this school has one of the best first time passing rates for the State Medical Board Exam and is well respected around the country. The school is accredited by the ACCSC and offers three types of massage therapy programs.
  • Northcoast Medical Academy: Combining hands-on experiences with up-to-date academic theories, this school offers students the necessary skills to enter the workforce as an entry level massage therapist, or the ability to open their own practice. Students learn from professional LMTs to help them further in their success.

Other education options include Miami-Jacobs Career College and Beckfield College.

How Much Will I Earn?

The average annual wage of a massage therapist in Ohio was $39,270 in 2014. This is on the lower side of state earnings, with the average national salary at $41,790. However, massage therapists who work in Toledo have the opportunity to earn a higher salary, with the average for this city at $47,570 annually.
