First and foremost, each state has its own unique requirements for what constitutes a massage CEU good towards meeting their requirements for such. Some states have annual requirements, others biennial, and some don't even require CEUs.

Yes and no. An online massage CEU can apply to all the hours of continuing education that your state board requires, as long as those hours are not specifically designated as needing to be completed in a physical classroom. Many states will allow for a bulk of their CEU requirements to be completed in either format - online or in a classroom, up to a certain threshold. Many states will then also have a requirement for a few hours to be completed in an actual classroom setting. In-classroom education is usually required to allow for physical demonstration of a specific technique and/or hands-on practice for participants.

Be aware, many states require both live classroom hours and then more general hours that can be completed in a classroom or online.

Most states accept online massage CEUs for satisfying at least a portion of their continuing education requirements. Be sure to check your state board so you know the composition of their course requirements. In Florida for example, for massage therapists to renew their licenses biennially they will have to have satisfied 12 “live” hours in a classroom setting and then 12 hours that can be completed in either a classroom or online (when the course providers are properly accredited and courses are state board-approved).

For classes like professional ethics, laws and regulations, or prevention of medical errors, online education affords a really convenient way for most therapists to complete that portion of their required continuing education.
