On-site and outcall massage therapists could focus on safety in the following ways:

  • Setting Healthy Boundaries. Setting boundaries is about learning to take care of yourself, no matter what happens, where you go or who you’re with. The purpose is to gain enough security and sense of self to be able to develop relationships with others. Setting healthy boundaries between ourselves and our clients is important. Recognizing boundaries and sticking to them is an ongoing process. It is your responsibility-–not the clients’–-to set healthy boundaries.
  • Self Defense Tips. Take a self-defense course and follow up with kickboxing or combat classes. Read Gavin De Becker’s The Gift of Fear. Keep your cell phone with you and call 911 immediately if you sense danger.
  • Be Aware. Awareness is one of the most important things in self-defense. By being aware of your surroundings, many threats can be avoided.
  • Body Language. Monitor your body language. If you sense danger, take care of yourself and leave if possible. Trust your instincts. If you think a situation might be dangerous, then it probably is. Recognize the sequence: the look, the talk, the attack. If you sense danger, leave. If you are challenged to defend yourself, aim for the nose with the palm of your hand, aim for the groin, the eyes, the throat and the top of the foot.
