New guidelines provide a roadmap for safe practice during coronavirus (COVID-19), for open massage businesses.

The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards has released Guidelines for Practice with COVID-19 Considerations, a document containing guidelines and recommendations for massage and bodywork professionals to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 while practicing, according to an FSMTB press release.

The document takes standard precautions and guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and adapts them to the massage and spa environment. It includes guidelines for cleanliness and sanitization, massage practitioner hygiene, client screening, modification of session procedures, personal protective equipment and more.

“The recommendations and guidelines do not replace any directives or guidance provided by federal or state agencies, regulatory boards, or other authorities having jurisdiction,” the release noted. “Where conflicts occur, the stricter requirement will apply.”
